Silva set to sign new Chelsea contract

Veteran defender Thiago Silva is set to sign a new one-year contract that will keep him at Chelsea past his 39th birthday.

The Guardian reports that the Brazilian, who joined from French club Paris St-Germain in 2020, is keen to stay in London and Blues boss Graham Potter values his experience at the back as he will try to bed in several new signings into his side following the club’s busy January transfer window.

Silva, who previously played for AC Milan, helped Chelsea win the Champions League in his first season at Stamford Bridge and has proved to be a fine acquisition for the club.

After struggling defensively in the 2-1 defeat by Fulham earlier this month, Chelsea have kept back-to-back clean sheets with Silva and recent arrival from Monaco Benoit Badiashile impressing in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

The Blues are also reportedly interested in adding Brighton’s Moises Caicedo in a deal worth £55m with Potter reportedly keen to reunite with the Ecuadorian midfielder.

Earlier this season Chelsea splashed out £60 million to sign Seagulls left-back Marc Cucerella, who has endured a difficult start to his career at Stamford Bridge, with youngster Lewis Hall recently selected in his place.
