Tuchel reveals why he isn’t satisfied with Loftus-Cheek

Thomas Tuchel says Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s future is in the midfielder’s own hands – but he wants to see more from him.

Loftus-Cheek, who spent last season on loan at Fulham, was back in a Chelsea shirt again as Tuchel’s side won 2-1 at Arsenal in a friendly on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking about him at his post-match press conference, Tuchel said: “Generally I’m happy and that’s why he played – because he deserved to play.

“But I think he can do more. He can show up more. He can show more physical capability and drive more with the ball.

“I am never satisfied with him. I have a feeling that we need to push him to the absolute limit.”

Loftus-Cheek, 25, has had to battle his way back from a ruptured Achilles tendon and, given Tuchel’s midfield options, there are doubts over whether he has a role to play at Chelsea.

But Tuchel insists no decision about the player’s future has yet been taken.

“It’s too early to judge Ruben. He has everything in his hands,” Tuchel said.

“It’s on him to decide his own future, like for every player. He has to keep on going 150% – 100 is not enough.”
