Latest on the fitness of key Chelsea trio ahead of Real Madrid clash

Chelsea have some injury concerns ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.

Mateo Kovacic is set to miss out for the Blues, while the fitness of other players will need to be assessed ahead of the big game.

Boss Thomas Tuchel will speak at a press conference on Tuesday and will provide an update, but as of Monday morning it seemed that Kovacic is the only doubt.

Chelsea had hoped that the Croatian would be fit for the second leg and potentially even available for Saturday’s derby against Fulham, which the Blues won 2-0.

However, Tuchel explained at a press conference on Friday that Kovacic had suffered a setback in training, ruling him out of the Fulham game and probably the Real clash too.

Antonio Rudiger also missed the Fulham game after taking a whack to the face during the final stages of the first leg against Real.

But Rudiger is expected to be available for the second leg with the help of a protective mask.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have been managing the fitness of N’Golo Kante in light of his injury problems – and Tuchel believes the Frenchman is in good shape.

Kante was a key player in last week’s first leg, came on as a substitute against Fulham, and is expected to start Wednesday’s match.

Tuchel said on Friday: “N’Golo feels very good. He looked very good today in training – fresh again. I was quite impressed.”
