Billy Gilmour is set to complete his loan move from Chelsea to Norwich City for the 2021/22 season, after completing the isolation period following his COVID-19 positive test at Euro 2020.
The 20-year-old Scotland international was a highly sought after player even before the European Championships began, but a man-of-the-match display against England only extended his long list of admirers before Norwich secured his services.
Newcastle were also keen on Gilmour but he will be moving to East Anglia.
With N’Golo Kanté proving indispensable at the end of last season, Jorginho emerging as one of the best players so far at the European Championships and the experienced Mateo Kovačić adding fierce competition, a loan move to a Premier League side was seen by many at the club as the right step in Gilmour’s progression.
Thomas Tuchel was keen on Norwich, as the Canaries offered Gilmour a prominent role in the squad, an attractive playing style, as well a “double six” role.
Gilmour’s loan also opens up a midfield slot in the squad, which could signal either the arrival of one of many potential targets including Declan Rice and Aurélien Tchouaméni, or the inclusion of Conor Gallagher after an impressive loan at West Bromwich Albion.
