Moyes confident fans will be ‘right behind’ West Ham against Southampton

David Moyes says his West Ham side are prepared for any more crowd trouble and that he expects the home fans to get behind the players.

The Hammers’ last outing at the London Stadium against Burnley was marred by pitch invasions, missile throwing and protests against the club’s board.

The incidents clearly had an effect on the players as they capitulated to a 3-0 defeat.

West Ham now face a huge clash with relegation rivals Southampton on Saturday, knowing defeat will see them slip into the relegation zone.

But manager Moyes insists his side will not fold if the trouble flares up again.

He said: “We have got such a strong and powerful support base that when it’s good, it’s good but when you don’t, they let you know.

“We have to make sure that we are in the game, got to make sure we don’t let anything alter our mindset. I think the players are in a different mindset now. They are prepared.”

With hundreds of angry supporters congregating below the directors’ box, joint-owners David Sullivan and David Gold were eventually forced to leave their seats for their own safety, with Sullivan being struck by a coin.

Ahead of the Southampton game, security around the executive seats has been beefed up, while there will be an extra police presence in the ground.

West Ham great Sir Trevor Brooking and captain Mark Noble have this week been urging fans to behave themselves.

Moyes added: “I think the fans will be right behind us, they know the importance of the game. All of them.

“The bit’s been done now, lets make sure you help the team, we will do everything to give them something to cheer about. We’ll play our part, make sure you play your part.

“It’s a vital game but I have had vital games here since day one. They are getting more vital though, and we are running out of games.

“When I took over we were in the bottom three but then we went on and had some brilliant results. We have used the time off to emphasise to the players that by hook or by crook, we need to get back to winning games.

“I am hoping to pick up points from every team, whoever we play. They are must-win games but there are seven more. This one of eight must-win games between now and the end of the season.”
