Paper round-up: Arsenal reportedly chasing Greece defender

Arsenal have turned their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to the Daily Mail.

The Mail say Arsenal are looking into a potential deal for Papastathopoulos after Frieburg demanded £35m for Turkey defender Caglar Soyuncu.

The Gunners apparently believe Papastathopoulos would cost around £17m.

Arsenal are also interested in a £3m deal for Jonny Evans following West Brom’s relegation, the Daily Mirror say.

Meanwhile, West Ham will make an approach for Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, the Mirror also say.

Benitez is among a number of managers being linked with the job after David Moyes’ departure from the London Stadium was confirmed.

Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca is also among those linked and the Mirror say he is under consideration too along with Marco Silva and Manuel Pellegrini.

The Guardian, on the other hand, say West Ham want to interview former Manchester City boss Pellegrini as Fonseca appears to be out of the running.

The Guardian say Hammers co-owner David Sullivan hosted Fonseca and the agent Jorge Mendes at his Essex home on Monday afternoon but it has since been reported that Fonseca is set to renew his Shakhtar contract.

The Daily Telegraph suggest Luis Enrique is back in the frame for the Chelsea manager’s job after Maurizio Sarri held talks over staying at Napoli.

Ex-Barcelona boss Enrique was tipped to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea before reports the club had cooled their interest in him.

Sarri has since been touted as the favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge but reports in Italy have suggested he could stay in Naples.

The Telegraph therefore say this has boosted Enrique’s hopes of getting the Chelsea job this summer and that “sources believe” either he or Sarri will be taking over from Conte.

Following reports that Chelsea are interested in Mauricio Pochettino, The Sun say he plans to stay at Tottenham next season.

And Robert Lewandowski secretly met with agent Pini Zahavi for dinner and is plotting a move from Bayern Munich, with Chelsea interested, again according to The Sun.
