Arsenal are favourites to sign Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion as Manchester City are looking elsewhere, the Daily Telegraph say.

The newspaper say Arsenal are looking to sign defender Evans as well as Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a combined £75m.

According to the Telegraph Evans preferred a move to City but that they chasing are Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, leaving Arsenal to attempt to reach an agreement with Albion, reportedly for £20m.

The Daily Mirror run a similar story, declaring that Arsenal believe they are now in pole position to sign Evans with City looking abroad.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger suggested at a press conference on Tuesday that he plans to make more signings ahead of the transfer deadline.

Wenger said: “It depends on the opportunities we have. We can buy players. We are busy on all fronts, so overall I think we are open-minded. Every opportunity we have to strengthen our squad, we’ll take.

“If people want to buy some of our players, we have [examined that] – players who have less chances to play, we have done it, who deserve to play because they are great players, who have left us.”

Meanwhile, German newspaper Bild say Arsenal have increased their offer for Aubameyang from £48.3m to £50.9m.
