West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis has played down reports he is close to signing Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer.
Pulis is interested in the defender, who has started just 13 Premier League matches since arriving in north London from German club Cologne two years ago – and his first-team prospects continue to look bleak.
Albion have made enquiries about a number of defenders and are expected to make an offer for Wimmer.
It comes amid reports that Manchester City are pursuing a deal to sign Albion centre-back Jonny Evans despite having a bid for the Northern Ireland international rejected.
However, speaking at a press conference on Friday, Pulis dismissed suggestions a deal for Wimmer was about to go through.
Pulis said: “Whoever’s telling you we are close is miles away from fact. We have a lot of irons in the fire with a lot of targets.”
Wimmer has also been linked with Stoke City but there was no approach from them.
The Austrian has made 31 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions and there has been speculation about his future for some time.
He told Austrian media earlier this summer that he was frustrated by his lack of game time at Spurs but would like to stay in the Premier League were he to leave.
