Tottenham star expects to stay despite Man Utd interest

Toby Alderweireld says he expects to still be at Tottenham next season despite reports linking him with a summer move to Manchester United.

Spurs triggered an option in January to extend Alderweireld contract to 2020 but the new deal also includes a £25million release clause.

United have long been tipped to make a move for the Belgium defender, but he insists he is committed to Spurs.

He told the Daily Mail: “My only focus is Spurs. Because of this focus I think I had a good season as well.

“I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season.”

Alderweireld has been a key player in helping Tottenham reach the final of the Champions League.

They are underdogs going into Saturday’s clash with Liverpool in Madrid but the centre-back believes they have shown they are capable of beating the best sides.

He said: ‘It will be massive. We are going to do everything to win. Our route in the Champions League has not been easy.

“The group, Barcelona, Inter and Dortmund, City first in England and Ajax first in Holland, it was a very tough route.

“But the mentality of the team showed we can achieve anything that we want.”
