Spurs ‘a bit behind’ title rivals – Pochettino

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted that his team are “a bit behind” their big-spending rivals after they were beaten by Manchester City in a pre-season friendly in Nashville.

The 3-0 defeat came after a loss to Roma and Spurs were very much second best.

While the likes of City, Chelsea and Manchester United have been looking to spend, last season’s runners-up are the only Premier League club yet to make a signing this summer and Pochettino is keen to add to his squad during the coming weeks.

Speaking at a press conference after the City game, he said: “Of course, Man City have more senior players than us and they invest more money than us. You can see that we have a lot of young players on the bench.

“It’s true that the squads are completely different, but we are building the squad. Maybe today they have a little bit of an advantage, they are ahead of us because they have signed and kept the players that they want.

“We are a little bit behind, but working hard to sign some players who can help us and bring some energy and make us more competitive.”

Spurs are next in action on Saturday, when they face Juventus.

Their league season begins with an away match against promoted Newcastle on 13 August.
