Tottenham v Ajax player ratings

Tottenham have it all to do after losing 1-0 at home to Ajax in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. Here’s how we rated each Spurs player.

Hugo Lloris: 6
Left badly exposed for the Ajax goal. Produced a fine save late in the first half which could yet turn out to be all important.

Davinson Sanchez: 5
All over the place in the opening half an hour, Improved after that but still a poor night for the defender.

Jan Vertonghen: 5
A horrible night for the Belgian, who was given the runaround before the sickening clash of heads which ended his night early.

Toby Alderweireld: 5
Another who struggled in the first half. Played an important role in steadying the ship in the second though. Went close with a late header.

Kieran Trippier: 4
Another dismal showing that will do nothing to win over his critics. His delivery was simply awful at times.

Victor Wanyama: 5
Gave the ball away several times and was no match for Ajax’s slick midfield.

Christian Eriksen: 5
Had some bright moments in the second half as Spurs pushed forward but overall it was a disappointing showing against his former club.

Danny Rose: 7
At least showed some aggression and willingness to battle during a terrible start by Spurs. Kept up the work-rate and spent much of the second half bombing forward too. Deserved the applause he received when substituted late on.

Dele Alli: 5
Like Eriksen, was bright in spells in the second half but just didn’t have the impact Spurs needed him to.

Lucas Moura: 5
It was always going to be a tough mission, trying to provide some spark up front in the absence of Kane and Son. He couldn’t deliver and was well contained by Ajax. A wayward volley in injury time summed his performance up.

Fernando Llorente: 5
Inevitably caused some problems with his aerial threat but Ajax still dealt with him well enough. His lack of pace and poor movement helped them.

Moussa Sissoko: 8
Made all the difference after coming on. A terrific display in midfield, where Tottenham had been totally overrun.
