Willian looks poised to leave Chelsea

Willian is set to leave Chelsea after rejecting the club’s contract offer, according to The Athletic.

The Brazilian’s current contract expires this summer and he has been in talks with the club about a new deal.

The Athletic say Willian, 31, has been offered a two-year contract but wants a long-term deal and looks likely to leave at the end of the season.

The Sun say Tottenham and Arsenal are ready to pick up Willian, who is apparently keen to stay in London.

He is reportedly set to leave along with midfielders Tiemoue Bakayoko, and Danny Drinkwater, who have long been tipped to move on this summer.

Verdict

Willian has served Chelsea well but his departure this summer looks increasingly inevitable.

The club have been reluctant to give players over the age of 30 longer than one-year contracts, and a three-year deal, which would take him to 34, seems unrealistic.

Younger players like Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic are looking to make an impact and the club need to get the balance right between making new signings and ensuring youngsters are not frozen out.

That surely means that the likes of Willian and Pedro will move on along with Marcos Alonso and Olivier Giroud at the end of the campaign.
