Roberto De Zerbi has joked that smoking “too many cigarettes” could stop him still being in the dugout at the age of 70.
The Tottenham boss was asked at his pre-match press conference, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Leeds, whether he could follow Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired as Manchester United manager at 71.
“I don’t know. I think it’s the best job in the world,” De Zerbi said. “If you love football, nothing can give emotion like being a coach, to manage a group of players.
“But it’s tough. It’s tough. I smoke too many cigarettes maybe and for me it’s tougher.”
De Zerbi was also asked whether European football is the aim for Spurs this season, but he insisted the focus remains on one game at a time.
“We have many, many targets, but we can’t move our focus from game by game because we are not good enough yet to change the focus,” he said.
“We are building something special as an atmosphere in the dressing room. We are building a clear style of play. The players are playing much better than at the beginning.”
Spurs have won their last three games, and De Zerbi added: “Now we are a team, a strong team.”
Savio, Lucas Bergvall and Mykhailo Mudryk will miss the game at Elland Road, which De Zerbi described as one of the best stadiums in the Premier League, but Tosin Adarabioyo is available.
