The reasons QPR should sign Bassong

Sebastien Bassong continues to train with QPR and played in another game for the club’s Under-23 side this week.

The former Tottenham defender scored in a 5-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace in a one-sided game at Rangers’ Harlington training ground.

Rangers have insisted Bassong, a free agent since leaving Norwich City more than a year ago, is merely training with them in order to get fit while he finds a new club.

But there are possible reasons why the R’s should take the opportunity to keep the Cameroon international at Loftus Road, at least until the end of the season.

Light on numbers

Even with the recent arrival of Geoff Cameron on loan from Stoke City, manager Steve McClaren has not got a huge number of options at centre-back. Question marks remain over whether Grant Hall can get back to full fitness and Joel Lynch’s injury record does not bode well. Another option at centre-back might be useful.

Experience

Bassong has plenty experience, having played in the top flight for Spurs, Norwich and Newcastle. On a free transfer, he would be a no-risk signing and, although seemingly past his best, is not exactly ancient at 32.

The January embargo

As Rangers will be under a transfer embargo in January as part of their FFP settlement, bringing an extra centre-back on board now could turn out to be a wise move over the course of the season.
