QPR boss gives hint over next signing as clubs eye Eze deal

QPR boss Mark Warburton wants a centre-back after making George Thomas his first summer signing.

Winger Thomas, 23, has joined on a free transfer after being released by Leicester City.

And Warburton has told West London Sport he is keen to bolster his defensive options before next season.

Toni Leistner is out of favour, Grant Hall recently left the club, and youngster Conor Masterson has impressed but Rangers need an experienced head at the back.

So Warburton is in no doubt that signing a centre-back is a priority this summer.

“Yes, it would be, and I’m saying it because young guys have had to step up like young Conor, who at the start of the season I felt needed to go out on loan,” he said.

“You need to learn the ugly side of football, the demand for points and so on.

“He stepped up against Leeds, Swansea and Brentford and will be hoping to keep his shirt. I’ve never got a problem with that. There’s also young Joe Gubbins.

“But we need some physicality and some experience as well.”

Warburton will also no doubt be preparing for the departure of Ebere Eze, who has been widely tipped to move to the Premier League.

Several clubs are believed to be interested in Eze, including West Ham and Crystal Palace. Tottenham have also been linked with the exciting forward.
