Joe Cole has praised Tammy Abraham and says the Chelsea and England striker is “obsessed” with scoring goals.
Abraham grabbed his third goal in three games for the Blues in the one-sided 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday, coolly finding the bottom corner of the net via the post after a dazzling run and pass by Timo Werner.
Werner was played out wide to accommodate Abraham in the side and Abraham repaid boss Frank Lampard’s faith with a hugely impressive all-round display in which he led the line and provided a focal point for the numerous Blues attacks.
Abraham, 23, was also unlucky not to score in the first half with a header from Hakim Ziyech’s exquisite right-wing cross twhich was brilliantly tipped over by Magpies keeper Karl Darlow.
Cole, part of Lampard’s backroom coaching team at Stamford Bridge and also a respected pundit, told BT Sport even getting game as a central striker was an achievement, but one Abraham fully deserved.
“Tammy has done fantastic to get in the team because people have assumed Werner would come in,” Cole explained.
“Tammy gives you something different. He attacks the ball, he’s obsessed with scoring goals and his attitude is brilliant. He’s always improving.”
Cole also believes Chelsea have a genuine chance of winning the title this season.
He said: “Frank won’t thank me for it. But I’m the one getting excited. I think we can do it.”
