Ashley Cole hails Mount after Anfield win

Former Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole says Mason Mount is ‘Chelsea’s best player’ following the 1-0 victory at Anfield.

From being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s first starting line-up in the 0-0 draw against Wolves, Mount has now worked his way back into the eleven and Cole couldn’t be more impressed with the midfielder’s recent performances.

“I guarantee after the first or second training session of watching Mason Mount, he was the first name on the team sheet,” said Cole, who was working as a pundit for Sky Sports.

“I’ve been with him at Derby and I’ve watched him at Chelsea.

“I’ve seen the dedication, the hard work and the graft he puts in – not just in the training session but afterwards, too.

“For me, he’s the best player for Chelsea and he’s the first name on that teamsheet.”

England midfielder Mount’s strike at Anfield was his third Premier League goal in eight games since Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard, and his fifth Premier League goal of the season – all of which have come away from home.

Tuchel, meanwhile, has praised Andreas Christensen, who has been outstanding at the back since coming in for the injured Thiago Silva.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Tuchel said: “Andreas stepped in in the middle of the first half against Tottenham, which was a really tough thing to do.

“From the first minute he has been absolutely impressive. He is brave, strong in challenges, intelligent in build-up play and plays with a lot of confidence.

“I am absolutely happy about his performances. How he stepped up has been a big part of our performances.”
