Joe Cole hails ‘irreplaceable’ Chelsea star Kante

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole says a fully fit N’Golo Kante is irreplaceable after seeing the French World Cup winner star in the 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The 29 year old was outstanding playing in a more familiar defensive midfield role on an otherwise frustrating day for the Blues.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel selected Kante alongside Mateo Kovacic as one of two in the ‘double six’ position for his first league start under the German, a job Tuchel has repeatedly said ideally suits both the player and team.

“He was asked to do the things he is very good at,” said Cole, who was working as a pundit for BT Sport.

“He was breaking play up and has great defensive qualities. He has the ability to drive and can pick a pass. He is under-rated passer of the ball, without being exceptional. But his energy and what he gives you is irreplaceable. He is an excellent player.”

Kante has struggled with a series of minor injuries in the past two seasons, and Cole said it is crucial Chelsea mange his fitness and expectations.

“The thing with N’Golo is just keeping him fit. He is not the Kante of three years ago,” Cole explained. “You have to manage his training a bit. You can’t keep having him pick up these minor muscle injuries because he is so important.

“He may have to play less, because in big games you need him. He, along with Mason Mount, is one of the leaders in the group. He is a leader, but a quiet leader.”
