Joe Cole backs Werner but says Lampard may need to make changes

Former Chelsea star Joe Cole believes Frank Lampard may have to freshen up his squad after a “leggy” performance at Wolves.

Cole thought fatigue had played its part as the Blues laboured to take the lead at Molineux before letting it slip.

“Frank may have to take a view on a few players who looked a little leggy,” he said on BT Sport.

“We have got the squad to do that. Everton was a bump in the road and this was a little bit bigger bump in the road.

“I certainly wouldn’t change too much, maybe just tweak a few players here and there.

“They have got to be confident in what they have done because it was 17 games unbeaten before the last two, but in this game they looked a little bit limited.”

Cole played down the significance of Chelsea’s first back-to-back defeats of 2020 on their title chances in a wildly unpredictable Premier League season.

But he also believes Lampard’s side cannot afford to lose Saturday’s meeting with in-form West Ham.

“Right from the start of the season, they looked well drilled, well organised, they look a threat and having Pulisic back is a big plus,” he added.

“There’s nothing better than a big derby now to play on Saturday. It will be a massive game at Stamford Bridge that Chelsea have to win.”

Cole also defended Timo Werner after the Germany international’s barren run in front of goal continued after an off-key performance in the West Midlands.

“When he comes in off the left he is very, very dangerous,” he said.

“I just think he needs to brush up a little bit on his finishing, but he is a young striker and he will do that.

“I have no doubts he will be a top, top player for Chelsea.”
