Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has suggested Chelsea were in no mood to compromise over a deal for Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer.
The Bundesliga champions made their interest clear in the Chelsea academy graduate clear during the transfer window, but talks between the clubs eventually came to nothing.
“There are transfers that come to the point where you have to say: ‘We have to leave this immediately’,” Salihamidzic told Sport Bild.
“It is all the more important that one thinks about alternatives or alternative paths right from the start.
“We negotiated with Chelsea but there was no agreement. That happens.”
Hudson-Odoi made 33 appearance for the Blues last term, but faced increased competition after the arrival of winger Hakim Ziyech from Ajax in the summer.
Frank Lampard has repeatedly insisted Hudson-Odoi was part of his future plans at Stamford Bridge.
The 19-year-old, who has won three senior caps for England, started in the 4-0 win over Crystal palace last time out having scored in the dramatic fightback at West Brom.
But Bayern head coach Hansi Flick remains an admirer, suggesting the Champions League holders could yet return with another approach.
“He is one of the greatest talents in that position,” he said of the Chelsea winger.
“He can play wide and as a number 10 so it’s entirely legitimate that we at Bayern Munich are interested in him.”
