Xhaka clash was ‘absolutely idiotic’ – Carragher

Jamie Carragher slammed Granit Xhaka for an “absolutely idiotic” clash with Trent Alexander-Arnold during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool.

Arsenal were two up and seemed to be in complete control at Anfield after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

But Gunners midfielder Xhaka tangling with Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold riled the home crowd and their side pulled a goal back shortly afterwards.

It seemed like a turning point in the game, with the goal shortly before the interval sparking Liverpool into life when they had previously been very much second best.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Liverpool and England defender Carragher said: “If I was an Arsenal fan I’d be angry. What are you doing, doing that? It’s absolutely daft. It’s absolutely idiotic.”

After Roberto Firminho’s equaliser, Arsenal came under sustained pressure and keeper Aaron Ramsdale had to produce brilliant late saves from Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konaté to ensure the Premier League leaders emerged with a point.

They are six points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand and currently a superior goal difference.

The outstanding Ramsdale also pulled off a fine save from Darwin Nunez in the second half as Liverpool had the upper hand, having been totally outplayed in the first half up until the incident involving Xhaka.
