Carlos Sanchez insists West Ham are “on the right track” despite three straight Premier League defeats.
New boss Manuel Pellegrini has recruited extensively in the summer, but the Hammers have slipped to losses to Liverpool, Bournemouth and Arsenal.
Colombia midfielder Sanchez is adamant Pellegrini’s men are close to clicking however, and backed the Hammers to come good, and quickly.
West Ham should make a number of changes for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup trip to AFC Wimbledon, but Sanchez expects Pellegrini’s managerial project to reach lift-off with precious little delay.
“It’s complicated but I think we’re on the right track,” said Sanchez, running the rule over Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal.
“We lost but we could have scored more goals, we couldn’t do it but, with more time, I think the team will be much better.
“This is the best league in the world. Starting today was very exciting and made me happy. I’m thankful to my team-mates who did their best to win this match.
“We couldn’t win, but I leave satisfied with the face that the team showed and my individual performance.”
Sanchez took the captain’s armband after injury cut short skipper Marko Arnautovic’s afternoon at the Emirates Stadium.
The 32-year-old holding midfielder would be a candidate for captaincy from the off at Kingsmeadow when West Ham will hope to ease past League One outfit Wimbledon.
And Sanchez remains confident the Hammers are still stepping in the right direction despite their slow start to the season.
“It wasn’t the best start to the season, but I believe the team is doing a good job and I believe that we will be able to achieve the results and goals that we set at the beginning of the season,” Sanchez told West Ham’s website.
“I think the result today was deceiving, we had a lot of chances to score more goals. I don’t know if we’d have won but at least we’d have been able to rescue a point.
“The project is very exciting, I’m very grateful for being in this club who opened the doors of the Premier League again for me.”
