West Ham midfielder Jack Wilshere has undergone ankle surgery and is facing a “relatively short period of rest”.

Wilshere had the procedure on Monday morning and the Hammers’ head of medical Richard Collinge has revealed the operation went to plan.

In a statement on the club’s official website, Collinge said: “Jack underwent successful surgery in London on Monday morning for a minor ongoing ankle issue. The surgeon was happy with the procedure and all went as planned.

“We envisage he will only need a relatively short period of rest and will then start his rehabilitation. Jack is focused and determined to get back training and playing as soon as possible.”

Wilshere, 26, has made four Premier League appearances for the club following his arrival from Arsenal during the summer, but missed Sunday’s 3-1 win at Everton because of the injury.

Their victory at the weekend gave the Hammers their first points under manager Manuel Pellegrini and took them off the bottom of the Premier League table.
