West Ham man earns late England call-up

West Ham left-back Aaron Cresswell has been called up to the England squad for the first time.

The 26-year-old was drafted in on Monday after Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater pulled out through injury.

He will now hope to play a part in the World Cup qualifier against Scotland at Wembley on Friday, and a friendly against Spain next Tuesday.

Cresswell has only played four matches this season after recovering from knee ligament damage last month.

He was sent-off 75 minutes into his first game back, the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, but then played a full part as West Ham beat Chelsea in the League Cup.

The former Ipswich man, who joined the Hammers in July 2014, has also completed 90 minutes against Everton and Stoke.

Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford has also been given a late call following the withdrawal of Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

The London contingent in the England squad includes Spurs’ Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Eric Dier and Harry Kane, Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and his Southwark-born former Blues team-mate Ryan Bertrand, Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and out-on-loan midfielder Jack Wilshere, Stockwell-born ex-Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne and Harlesden-raised former QPR winger Raheem Sterling.
