West Ham defender expected to sign new contract

Reece Oxford is expected to sign a new contract at West Ham.

The highly-rated central defender, who turns 18 next month, has repeatedly been linked with top Premier League clubs amid reports that he could leave.

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have all been tipped to move for Oxford during the last year or so – there was speculation about his future before he had even made a first-team appearance

Oxford is regarded as one of the country’s brightest prospects and his current contract is due to expire in 2018.

That prompted speculation that he could refuse to sign a new deal and reports West Ham feared the prospect of losing the player at the end of next season, although because of his age they would have been entitled to a compensation fee.

But negotiations have continued and Oxford appears to be ready to put pen to paper and commit his future to the Hammers.

He has made 14 first-team appearances so far, with seven of them coming in the Premier League, although he has not featured since August.

Oxford is currently unavailable after suffering an ankle injury in training but he is expected to return to action next month.
