Jamie Redknapp criticised West Ham’s defensive tactics following their 1-0 defeat at Manchester United.
Hammers boss David Moyes defended his cautious approach despite the disappointing result at Old Trafford.
But former England midfielder Redknapp insisted Moyes got it wrong.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “They were too defensive in the first half.
“I’ve really enjoyed watching West Ham this year at times. But I didn’t enjoy that performance.
“In the first half they set up almost like (they had) an inferiority complex.
“They played five at the back – not a three, it was a five – and the three in midfield. They were hoping they might get something on the counter-attack or a set piece.
“I just feel that if you’re going to set up that way it sends a message to the players.
“I’ve been in dressing rooms when the manager sets up tactically (like that) – ‘’We’re just hanging on for a draw here. We’re just going to die a slow death’.
“And that’s pretty much what they did. I didn’t enjoy that West Ham performance with the way they set up.”
Redknapp’s fellow pundit Bobby Zamora agreed that Moyes’ tactics backfired.
“They should have been on that front foot,” said the former Hammers striker.
“Just their mindset – the way they set up in that first half wasn’t the right way.
“Where West Ham are at the minute, you have to attack those games and create chances.
“They looked like they had something in the second half, but they were too late.”
