West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has backed Reece Oxford to make his mark in Germany this season.

Highly-rated defender Oxford, 18, has so far not made an appearance for Borussia Monchengladbach since moving from the Hammers on loan in a surprise move during the summer.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Bilic insisted the youngster is good enough to impress during his time away and then establish himself as a first-team player at the London Stadium.

Bilic, who loaned Oxford to Championship side Reading last season, said: “He needed to go somewhere to play more regularly.

“He is at a good club and unfortunately he is still waiting, but he is very positive and I expect him to get in their starting line-up soon and then come back and be a regular player for us.

“He needs to use this in the right way. He has got it in him to get his place and start playing regularly. Hopefully he will get that in Germany and it’ll be great (for him) to play in the Bundesliga.”

Bilic will have Manuel Lanzini and Michail Antonio available for Saturday’s trip to Burnley but James Collins is still recovering from an ankle injury.
