Paper round-up: City tipped to sign Dutch youngster

Manchester City are set to beat Tottenham to the signing of Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to the Daily Star Sunday.

Spurs have long been linked with the Netherlands international, who was tipped to leave Ajax during the summer transfer window.

The Daily Star Sunday say his valuation has jumped from £45m to £71m and that this “has blown Spurs out of the water” but that City are ready to pay that amount.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will re-open contract talks with Christian Eriksen, according to the Sun on Sunday.

Arsenal could try to sign Juan Mata if he leaves Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer, the Daily Star Sunday claim.

Mata’s contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of the season and there is speculation over whether he will sign a new deal.

He previously played under Arsenal boss Unai Emery at Valencia and “could prove an irresistible bargain to his old coach”, the Star on Sunday suggest.

There is inevitably speculation over the future of Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic in the wake of another heavy defeat for the struggling Whites, who went down 3-0 at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Cesc Fabregas has refused to rule out a move from Chelsea back to Arsenal, the Sunday Express reports.

It comes after reports in the former Gunners midfielder’s native Spain quoted Fabregas as saying: “Arsenal will always be in my heart and I will never forget them so why not return? You never know.”

The Sunday Mirror claim Chelsea want Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, while The Sun on Sunday say Crystal Palace are leading a race to sign Southend midfielder Dru Yearwood.

And QPR director of football Les Ferdinand is set to be included on the shortlist for the role of FA technical director, the Sunday Times reports.
