Pochettino thanks fans after Spurs win

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino thanked the club’s fans after his team beat CSKA Moscow 3-1 in their final Champions League group match.

Spurs had already missed out on a place in the knockout stage, but their win at Wembley – watched by a crowd of over 62,000 – secured a place in the Europa League.

And after defeats against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen at the national stadium, where Tottenham are playing their European home matches, the result was a morale booster.

Pochettino said: “I want to say thank-you to our supporters. They were brilliant again – 62,000. We showed how big our club is.

“Thank you to them on behalf of my staff and all the players.

“The performance was good. We showed that we can win here. That was important for us – (after) the bad feeling that was after Monaco and Leverkusen. That was very important.”

Spurs came from behind to beat the Russian side, with Dele Alli equalising and Harry Kane putting them ahead before keeper Igor Akinfeev diverted Alli’s header into his own net.

It completed a resounding win, but their elimination from the tournament remains a major disappointment.

“After fighting last season for the right to play in the Champions League we can feel disappointed about that,” Pochettino admitted during his post-match press conference.

“But there are many important things left for us to play for. In the Premier League we must fight.”
