Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham’s brilliant victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League proved they deserve to be regarded as one of Europe’s top sides.
Dele Alli scored twice for Spurs as they beat the holders 3-1 at Wembley and clinched their place in the knockout stage of the tournament in superb style.
“Our performance was fantastic and I am so happy for everyone connected with the club,” manager Pochettino declared at his post-match press conference.
“It was important for us to get to the next round of the competition.
“This sort of win brings with it certain consequences, making us more visible, and it something everyone around Europe would have seen.
“We are big team, playing at Wembley in front of 80,000 people. We belong not only with the best in England but in Europe too.”
On a less positive note for Spurs, key defender Toby Alderweireld picked up a hamstring injury during the game.
It is feared that Alderweireld could be facing a number of weeks on the sidelines. He certainly looks likely to miss this weekend’s London derby against Crystal Palace.
“To be ready for the weekend will be difficult, but we will assess him over the next few days,” said Pochettino.
