Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has urged his former side to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium international is entering the final year of his contract with the North London club after they triggered an extension clause in his contract in January.
According to talkSPORT, Alderweireld, formerly a target for Manchester United, has a £25million release clause and its activation seems inevitable given his quality.
And Liverpool former full0back Nicol, who registered almost 500 appearances for the club between 1981 and 1994, reckons the Belgium international would form a formidable partnership at the heart of Reds defence with Virgil van Dijk.
Nicol, as quoted via talkSPORT said: “One hundred per cent this guy’s going. We just don’t know where it is.
“Again, this is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.
“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing.”
It would be surprising to see Liverpool join in the race to sign the Belgium international as they already have plenty options in central defence.
The Reds still boast of the best defensive record so far this season having conceded just 20 goals in the Premier League so far.
Liverpool maintain their position at the top of table with 82 points via their 3-1 win at St Mary’s against Southampton and they play host to Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea side at the Anfield next weekend.
