Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho reportedly faces the prospect of having his transfer budget significantly reduced because of the coronavirus crisis.
The Daily Mail reports that Spurs’ projected income has been badly affected by the pandemic and its knock-on effects.
Football suspended
An obvious problem is the lack of revenue caused by Premier League matches being suspended. This has affected all clubs at all levels of English football.
Tottenham stadium naming rights
This is reportedly worth up to £300m and there are now said to be serious doubts over whether a naming rights deal will be in place during the summer, which was the initial expectation.
Anthony Joshua fight called off
Heavyweight champion Joshua was scheduled to defend his world titles against Kubrat Pulev at Spurs’ stadium on 20 June. That has now been postponed – another financial setback for the club.
NFL dates in doubt too
There are also serious doubts over whether NFL matches will be able to go ahead at the stadium.
All of these factors together mean Mourinho is likely to feel the impact when it comes to summer signings.
Chairman Daniel Levy said this week: “When I read or hear stories about player transfers this summer like nothing has happened, people need to wake up to the enormity of what is happening around us.
“We need to realise that football cannot operate in a bubble.
“We maybe the eighth largest club in the world by revenue according to the Deloitte survey but all that historical data is totally irrelevant as this virus has no boundaries.”
