Toby Alderweireld has denied suggestions that Tottenham players wanted Jose Mourinho out.
Mourinho was recently shown the door by Spurs following a series of lousy performances by the team.
There had been reports that Spurs players were unhappy with him and it has since been suggested they were glad to see the back of the Portuguese manager.
However, defender Alderweireld has insisted that is not the case.
“You never want to see a manager leave,” Alderweireld said in an interview with Talksport.
“We don’t feel like, ‘oh, it’s all because of the manager’. We’re in this together, so we feel responsible 100 per cent. People want to look for the problems, but it didn’t feel like that.”
The decision to part with Mourinho ahead of today’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City certainly raised eyebrows.
Ryan Mason will lead the team out at Wembley having been placed in interim charge.
Alderweireld said: “It’s been a difficult week because you work with a manager for a year-and-a-half and suddenly he’s not there any more – I think everyone feels very sad about it.
“You’re together. Not just the manager, the training staff in general. There are a lot of people you work with on a daily basis. You want to be better together. And then suddenly you’re surprised that he was not there any more. So, of course, that’s very sad.”
