Mourinho ‘was against deal to re-sign Bale’

Jose Mourinho was against Tottenham bringing Gareth Bale back to the club, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Bale’s failure to deliver following his return on loan from Real Madrid has been one of the factors in a disappointing season for Spurs, who sacked Mourinho on Monday.

And the Telegraph say Mourinho was opposed to the deal chairman Daniel Levy negotiated to take Bale back to north London.

The same newspaper also reports that Mourinho has earned £77.5m from the sackings he has had during his career and that Levy decided to remove him now because of interest from Bayern Munich in Julian Nagelsmann, who is the favourite to take over at Spurs.

The Daily Mail also say Nagelsmann is the man Levy wants to install as manager following Mourinho’s departure.

And The Sun declare that Nagelsmann could be in the job before the end of the season even though he has two years remaining on his contract at RB Leipzig.

Meanwhile, The Independent say the decision to part with Mourinho was made on Friday night following the team’s woeful performance against Everton.

Confirming the sacking on Monday, Levy said in a statement: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club.

“Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.

“On a personal level, I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.

“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
