Newcastle tipped to move for Tottenham midfielder Winks

Newcastle want to sign midfielder Harry Winks from Tottenham, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper say Winks is a ‘prime target’ for the Tyneside club following the recent takeover at St James’ Park.

Newcastle, struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table, are expected to spend heavily when the transfer window reopens in January.

It appears that Winks is very much on their radar, with the player keen to play regular first-team football after struggling for game time at Spurs.

He was, however, given a starting place for Spurs’ 2-1 win at home to Leeds on Sunday.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg equalised and Sergio Reguilo scored the winner – his first goal for the club – as they came from behind.

The victory left Spurs in seventh place, four points behind fourth-placed West Ham.

And boss Antonio Conte wants his team to be ready to pounce if the top four slip up.

“We want to fight, we want to improve the position in the table,” Conte said during his post-match press conference.

“At this moment, there are four teams that, for many reasons, because they are working with the same coach, they invested a lot of money, at this moment there are four teams and there is a gap. I’m not scared about this.

“I trust in my players, I trust in my squad. We want to fight to stay close and fight for Champions League.

“Then if there’s one team that slips up this season or makes mistakes, we must be there to try to do our best.”
