Gomez set to face Spain but no word yet on Winks

Gareth Southgate says Joe Gomez is likely to come into the England side against Spain but did not confirm who will replace Jordan Henderson.

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has been tipped to slot into the team in place of Liverpool’s Henderson, who is suspended for the Nations League game in Seville after picking up a yellow card on Friday’s 0-0 draw with Croatia.

It would be a second cap for Winks, who is back in contention following a long struggle with ankle trouble.

South Londoner Gomez, who has impressed for Liverpool, is set to replace John Stones as the Manchester City defender is also suspended.

England boss Southgate, speaking at a press conference ahead of Monday’s match, said: “It’s probably pretty clear Joe Gomez will be coming in for John.

“Joe’s in really good form for his club and, for us, the matches against Brazil and Spain have been really polished performances.

“He’s a very young defender but a very good defender and I’m looking forward to seeing him in this game.”

Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck and Winks’ Tottenham team-mate Danny Rose withdrew from the squad because of injury last week.
