England boss Gareth Southgate praised Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Harry Winks following the 1-0 win in Lithuania.

England completed their World Cup qualifying campaign with another uninspiring performance but Kane scored yet again and young midfielder Winks enjoyed an encouraging debut.

Winks’ display was a definite plus for Southgate, who has plenty to ponder ahead of next summer’s tournament in Russia.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Southgate praised Winks, saying: “One of the big things when you play for England isn’t necessarily the opposition, it’s whether you can handle wearing an England shirt.

“I thought he did that in a really accomplished way. He looked confident, looked composed and tried to play forward when he could, so that was a real positive.”

Kane, meanwhile, goes from strength to strength.

The striker’s first-half penalty was his 15th goal in his last 10 appearances for club and country.

Southgate, who played alongside Alan Shearer and has managed the likes of Wayne Rooney, believes the Spurs star is on a par with England’s best forwards of recent decades.

He said: “It’s a fantastic record. His finishing is as good as anyone I’ve played with or worked with. We’re lucky to have him.”
