Sheffield Wednesday set to beat Leeds United and Nottingham Forest to midfielder deal

Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Massimo Luongo.

Leeds United and Nottingham Forest were interested in the Australian midfielder, who has a year remaining on his contract.

But he is set for a move to Hillsborough ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

West London Sport reported earlier this summer that Rangers would look to offload Luongo and that Wednesday were interested.

Director of football Les Ferdinand later confirmed that Luongo was set to depart.

And there appeared to be no way back for the player when he was left out of the pre-season trip to Austria, with manager Mark Warburton confirming it was because Luongo’s future lay elsewhere.

Warburton told Rangers’ website at the time: “Massimo has been a loyal servant of the club for the last four years and his passion and commitment for QPR has always been there for everyone to see out on the pitch.

“Massimo’s future could now lie away from QPR and therefore it is important that we prepare for that potential eventuality.

“We will give opportunities in Austria to some of the club’s younger players who have come through the academy, such as Charlie Owens and Charlie Rowan.”

Now the Owls have made their move and Luongo is expected to undergo a medical before completing his move yo Yorkshire.
