Holloway’s warning over QPR keeper Smithies

Ian Holloway has warned that QPR cannot keep relying on Alex Smithies.

The Rangers goalkeeper has spared his team from thrashings in recent defeats against Ipswich and Wolves.

A rare mistake by Smithies led to a goal in the 3-0 loss at Ipswich, but he produced fine saves to keep the score down in that game and did so again when his team lost 2-1 at home to Wolves on Friday.

And manager Holloway believes Smithies cannot be expected to keep producing heroics if Rangers continue to defend poorly.

“We’re going to let four, five or six in if we do that,” Holloway told West London Sport.

“We needed our goalie to make absolutely out-of-this-world saves. That ain’t going to happen every time is it?”

Meanwhile, Rangers are hoping Jack Robinson is available for Saturday’s match at Rotherham.

The left-back aggravated a hamstring problem late in the game against Wolves, when QPR had used all their substitutions and were down to 10 men following the sending-off of James Perch.

Holloway explained: “We should have brought Robbo off but that would have meant nine men. He got injured – again – in the last 10 minutes but he stayed on.”
