Portsmouth appear to have been given the green light to sign Paul Smyth on loan from QPR.
West London Sport recently broke news that Pompey are interested in the Northern Ireland forward – and now that Rangers boss Steve McClaren seems to be open to letting him leave in order to play first-team football.
He would join QPR team-mate David Wheeler at Fratton Park, with the winger having recently been signed on loan by Pompey boss Kenny Jackett.
Smyth was signed from Linfield a year ago and impressed for QPR last season but has been on the fringes since McClaren took over.
He was not even in the matchday squad for the 1-0 win against Brighton on Saturday and McClaren has suggested Smyth could be allowed out on loan.
McClaren said: “We’ll have to look. We’ve got some good talent here – good youngsters – and a game like today you maybe can’t play them.”
Ebere Eze has managed to play a prominent role under McClaren but on Saturday was asked to play in an unfamiliar role on the right wing.
“We asked him to do a job and work hard and he did that. That’s part of his learning the other side of the game,” said McClaren.
“He (Eze) has got great talent and we’ve got a lot of players like that – players that need football, not necessarily in our team but elsewhere, so we’re looking at that.”
