Ferdinand explains why QPR wanted McClaren

Les Ferdinand says Steve McClaren’s ability to develop players was the main reason for him being appointed by Queens Park Rangers.

The former England boss has taken over as manager from Ian Holloway, who was sacked by the west London club last week.

McClaren is well respected as a coach and Rangers are keen for him to work with the youngsters at Loftus Road, some of whom impressed last season.

“He has a fantastic reputation in the game for coaching and developing players,” director of football Ferdinand told the club’s website.

“When you look at the average age of our squad, and the exciting young talent starting to emerge, he is the perfect fit for us.

“We want Steve to use his expertise and experience to help our players grow.

“We are delighted with this appointment and, speaking with Steve, I know how excited he is to be here and how determined he is to be a success.”

McClaren, whose last managerial job was at Derby County, has signed a two-year contract with the R’s.

He has also managed Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, FC Twente and Wolfsburg, having
initially made his name as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United.
