Explained: The reason Justin Obikwu is yet to play for QPR

The absence of Justin Obikwu has been a mystery to many QPR fans since his move from Coventry City.

The striker was signed in January after top scorer Rumarn Burrell was sidelined for at least two months with a hamstring injury.

But that was two months ago – and Obikwu has still not featured for the R’s.

Julien Stephan told West London Sport shortly after Obikwu’s move that the player had picked up an injury in training and would have to wait for his debut.

But head coach Stephan added that the problem was only a minor one, indicating that he expected to soon be able to select him.

However, as the weeks have gone on, there has still been no sign of Obikwu and no real explanation why.

Fans have therefore been left wondering why an apparently minor injury has somehow kept him out of action for so long.

But in a recent episode of the West London Sport QPR podcast, journalist David McIntyre stated that Obikwu had suffered a shin injury, which involved bone bruising, and that this explains his lengthy absence and why it was initially believed his spell on the sidelines would be a brief one.

This perhaps solves the mystery. Bone bruising is a notoriously frustrating injury in that it can at first seem fairly innocuous, but annoyingly persists when it seemed to be on the verge of healing.

Stephan will certainly be hoping to have Obiku available after the international break as QPR look to make a strong end to the season.
