Arsenal out of Youth Cup, Van Ginkel plays in Chelsea U23 game

Arsenal went out of the FA Youth Cup, losing 1-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers on Friday evening.

The Gunners were reduced to 10 men midway through the first half at Boreham Wood when Reiss Nelson (pictured) was red-carded following a melee.

The visitors took full advantage, with Daniel Butterworth’s goal with 12 minutes with remaining taking them through to the fourth round, where they will face Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Marco van Ginkel featured as Chelsea’s development side lost 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in the Premier League International Cup.

Dutch midfielder Van Ginkel, back in action following a knee problem, has played in a number of recent Under-23 matches as he looks to improve his fitness.

Filip Mihaljevic scored the only goal of the game at Aldershot, heading in a cross seven minutes before half-time.

Trevoh Chalobah and Mason Mount went close with headers and Ike Ugbo saw a shot saved as the young Blues tried in vain to avoid a first defeat in eight matches.

England Under-18 midfielder Tariq Uwakwe, who scored for Chelsea’s Under-18s in an FA Youth Cup win against Cardiff this week, came on as a second-half substitute for his debut at Under-23 level.
