United reportedly leading race for Maddison

Manchester United lead Tottenham in a race to sign Leicester City midfielder James Maddison, according to the Independent.

Spurs have been tipped to move for the 22-year-old, who has also been linked with Liverpool and Manchester City.

The Daily Mirror reported this week that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will be heavily backed financially this summer and that his targets include Maddison.

Pochettino is reportedly also keen to sign Fulham star Ryan Sessegnon as well as Maxi Gomez, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele.

But the Independent say it is United who are in pole position to sign Maddison, who has been outstanding for Leicester since arriving from Norwich.

The newspaper say signing Maddison has become United’s priority and that he is likely to cost close to £60m.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers will certainly not want to lose Maddison, who established himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting midfield players last season.

Speaking at a press conference last month, Rodgers said: “We have a very exciting group and I am very keen to develop the potential of the players I have here to maximise that.

“Our plan is to keep the players we have and then add some more quality.”
