Frank Lampard has said he is “surprised” by reports Thiago Silva is in talks with Chelsea about extending his contract.
The veteran centre-back has impressed since his arrival at Stamford Bridge on a one-year deal during the summer.
And reports have recently claimed that Silva is already speaking to the club about a new deal to extend his stay in London.
However, there is an option held by Chelsea to extend the contract if they wish to – so there is no need for them to rush into doing so.
It seems more likely that the club will wait until the end of the season to make a decision on Silva.
But there is no doubt that the Blues will look to retain the Brazil star if he maintains the kind of form and influence he has shown since his move.
Blues boss Lampard said at a press conference: “Obviously the way he’s playing at the minute, we are very happy.
“So that’s the end of it really. I’m surprised it’s come out in that way. We have the option in his contract.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, who has been pushed down the pecking order by Silva’s arrival, is being linked with a loan move to Newcastle.
