John Barnes believes Tottenham will wait until the summer to back Antonio Conte in the transfer market.
Spurs’ owners have been criticised by frustrated fans who want to see Conte given funds to improve the team.
But former Liverpool and England star Barnes reckons the summer will be a better time to invest.
Speaking to BonusCodeBets, Barnes said: Barnes said: “January is not the time to invest in the squad for Tottenham.
“At the start of the season. you don’t know what the situation was. Obviously, Antonio Conte wasn’t there, so you would imagine he is likely to get signings at the beginning of next season. This will be a lot more interesting to see.
“You can’t really strengthen the team in January better than what you have, he’s not going to be able to get better than he has now.”
Conte himself has admitted that he will not be able to turn Spurs into a strong side in this transfer window alone.
Speaking at a recent press conference, manager Conte said: “They are fantastic the way they support us, but at the same time I want to tell the truth with our fans.
“I want to be very clear: if we think that with the transfer window in January we will sort the situation, I would be telling you a lie. There is a lot of a job to do.”
