Arsenal legend slates Emery’s tactics at Liverpool

Ian Wright has criticised Arsenal boss Unai Emery’s tactics in the 3-1 defeat against Liverpool.

The Gunners were well beaten at Anfield, where Emery opted to switch to a diamond midfield.

That presented Liverpool full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson with a huge amount of space – and they took full advantage.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed surprised after the game that Emery had adopted the formation.

And former Arsenal and England striker Wright agreed that it had played into Liverpool’s hands.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Wright said: “I was very surprised they played a diamond, arguably giving up space to two of the best full-backs in Europe.

“It was a strange one. You could see the diamond – and then you could see the space (Robertson and Alexander-Arnold had).

“We know what these two are capable of – 18 crosses in open play between them – and if you give them this kind of space then you’ve got problems.

“He was laughing when he was saying it, Klopp, because he couldn’t believe it either.”

Wright’s fellow pundits Gary Lineker and Danny Murphy agreed that Emery’s tactics had backfired badly.

“It looked like a system they hadn’t worked on,” Murphy said.

Lineker added: “It’s almost like they were playing to Liverpool’s strengths.”
