Chelsea linked with possible move for Everton’s Digne

Chelsea have been linked with a potential move for Everton left-back Lucas Digne.

It comes after Digne was dropped by Rafael Benitez after an apparent difference of opinion with the Everton boss.

The Express speculate that Chelsea could therefore move for the Frenchman given that Ben Chilwell could be sidelined for a number of months with a knee injury.

However, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel recently indicated that he does not see bringing in a left-sided player as a priority.

Marcos Alonso is the first-choice wing-back in Chilwell’s absence and Tuchel suggested he could deploy Saul Niguez or Callum Hudson-Odoi in that role.

And he duly selected Saul as a wing-back for Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Zenit in the Champions League.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Tuchel said: : “They (Chilwell and Alonso) compete for one position, which is the left wing-back position, and suddenly if one has a longer injury like Ben now it can suddenly seem that you don’t have enough.

“If you look at the schedule it seems like ‘Oh, does Marcos have to play every three days?’ Is that possible? Maybe not.

“I think we still have Callum, who can play on the left side as a wing-back and we have other ideas we can maybe try.

“But first of all Marcos is the one in charge. He’s the specialist (wing-back).”
