England player ratings: How Cahill, Alli and co fared at Wembley

England were comfortable winners at Wembley, where they beat Malta 2-0 in a one-sided World Cup qualifier. Here’s how we rated the players.

Joe Hart: 6

Inevitably a spectator for most of the game, but did his job when he was called upon to make a late save.

Kyle Walker: 7

Would have been expected to get forward often against a team offering very little attacking threat. The Tottenham man did not disappoint, giving England an excellent outlet on the right-hand side as they looked to break down stubborn opposition.

Gary Cahill: 6

The Chelsea defender has had problems for his club this season but was able to coast in this game. Had a decent chance to score in the first half but miscued.

John Stones: 7

It was important for England that Stones took advantage of Malta’s limited threat by stepping out with the ball at every opportunity to effectively give them an extra man further up the field. He did exactly that in a composed display.

Danny Rose: 7

Replaced the injured Ryan Bertrand on 19 minutes and, like Spurs team-mate Walker, he offered plenty going forward from full-back.

Jordan Henderson: 8

Did very well in midfield. Drove his team forward and completed an impressive 165 passes, one of which set up the opening goal for Daniel Sturridge.

Wayne Rooney: 6

Did nothing to silence his critics, particularly the first half when he was sloppy at times. Did a steady job in midfield but the Rooney of old would surely have produced much more against such poor opposition.

Theo Walcott: 7

Troubled Malta with his pace on the flank. Had an effort well saved and generally played well.

Dele Alli: 7

Always lively and scored a good goal when he poked the ball home at the second attempt after reacting quickly when his initial shot was saved. Had the best chance of the second half but the Tottenham playmaker was unable to connect with Marcus Rashford’s cross.

Jesse Lingard: 7

Impressed on the left-hand side, where he made an impact both wide and when he drifted in from the wing. Set up a chance for Walcott in the second half.

Daniel Sturridge: 7

Again showed when he can do as England’s number nine when fit. Opened the scoring with a fine header and was sharp throughout.

Marcus Rashford: 6

Bright when introduced for the final 22 minutes. Set up a chance for Alli and again showed his potential.
