Crystal Palace boss confirms he wants Defoe

Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce says he would like to sign Jermain Defoe this summer.

Allardyce, whose side are battling against relegation, expects a number of clubs to target Defoe.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Allardyce said: “If we’re safe in the Premier League and Jermain Defoe is available and wants to come to Crystal Palace, we’ll be interested.”

West Brom boss Tony Pulis has hinted that he is also interested in signing Defoe.

The 34-year-old striker, from Beckton, is expected to leave Sunderland following their relegation from the Premier League.

His Black Cats contract expires this summer and he has been tipped to move on a Bosman free transfer for some time.

He has been linked with a return to his former club West Ham, while Bournemouth, where Defoe spent time on loan as a youngster, are also reported to be interested in him.

And Pulis has indicated that he would also like to bring in Defoe as Albion look to improve their attacking options.

Also speaking at a press conference on Friday, Pulis said: “When you say he’s a free agent, effectively he’s a free agent, but that still brings an enormous cost to whichever club takes Jermain.

“We’ve got our fingers in the pie on quite a few players and we’ll see how we go on those players. If Jermain’s one of them, we’ll be pushing on that one if we can.

“When Saido left we had Robson-Kanu and Salomon, a free transfer and a player that’s only spent one season in the Premier League, so we knew that was an area we had to improve.”
